Laundry Organisation

With 2020 behind us I wanted to have a fresh start this year and for me that means feeling organised and having things at home more under control. This not only makes the house look great but it’s also very good for my mental health not to have clutter everywhere. New Years cleaning and organisation is a tradition for me but this year I have decided to tackle each room in the house and really make some big changes.

If you want to see some of the other changes I’ve made this year click on the links below:-

Today I’m tackling my laundry organisation. My laundry wasn’t actually too bad but I had chalk labels and they had faded and were different sizes. The containers I was using in a lot of cases were not sufficient for the things they were storing. Things had been thrown in where they didn’t belong and it was enough to inspire me to get it sorted out.

FIRST THING TO TACKLE IN MY LAUNDRY ORGANISATION

First up was the cupboard above the sink. This is where I keep a lot of household items like batteries, felt pads for furniture and velcro hooks. I had used some white containers but they had low sides and things kept falling out when I tried to get them down and they weren’t big enough for what they had to hold. To fix this I ordered the same boxes I used in my kitchen organisation post. I want to try and give everything a more streamlined look throughout the house too. My Cricut came in handy again for labelling everything.

This cupboard also holds all the things I need for washing. For example stain removers, soakers, pegs, dryer balls and of course the detergent for my washing machine. To make accessing the everyday items easy I purchased a lazy susan from Kmart. I also purchased two spray bottles from Pretty Little Designs and two bottles from Ikea. You will find links to all the products used at the end of this post.

THE CUPBOARDS ABOVE THE BENCH WERE NEXT IN THE LAUNDRY ORGANISATION

I use these cupboards to store things like cleaning cloths and rags along with mending that needs to be done. This cupboard again was fairly well organised but I purged all items I didn’t use and relabelled everything. The containers I used here are the same as the ones I used in my fridge.

UNDER THE SINK

Not much to do in this cupboard as I store large bottles of my cleaning products in here. I did a good clean out though.

SINGLE DOOR CUPBOARD

This cupboard is where I store a variety of items like craft, gifts, beach towels and blankets. All I needed to do here was go through everything and purge all the items that were not being used. I reused all my wicker baskets and just relabelled everything. You might notice that I no longer have my iron and there is a good reason for this. After Christmas we purchased a Tefal IXEO All in One Steam Station and I love it. Having this means that I no longer use my iron so its in the garage for Tony and Em to use for ironing on melamine strips for their van conversion 😂.

DOUBLE DOOR LINEN CUPBOARD

Again this cupboard actually wasn’t too bad to start with but still needed some upgrading and relabelling. I kept the large wicker baskets I had as they are perfect for storing couch covers and pillows that are awkward to store tidily. Items I no longer used were given away. A shelf in the linen cupboard is also my wrapping station and the containers I had were too small to store everything neatly. I took the chance to upgrade the containers so they were consistent with the ones I used in the kitchen. This worked out great because they had much higher sides and keep the messier things like paper and ribbons more hidden away.

To store my sheets so they are easy to identify I found some white lidded containers from Kmart that were the perfect size.

This was also the perfect time to clean out my stash of cushions as I had way to many. I picked up a tip to just keep the cushion covers and get rid of the cheap inserts. That way you can rotate your covers and don’t have to store the bulky inserts. It really made a huge difference as I was able to condense most of my cushion covers in to two of the white containers with lids. I had cushions in the linen cupboard and some shelves in my guest room closest so I was really excited to have so much space back.

The bottom shelf of my linen cupboard stores all of the scrapbook albums I have done for my daughter. They take up so much room so my goal is to transfer all the photos and information into small photo books but thats a job for another time!!!!

SEWING CUPBOARD

This cupboard stores all the things for sewing. I purchased new bamboo boxes to store the feet and bobbins for the sewing machine. Three glass jars hold all my buttons – my great grandmother used to have a huge button collection which I loved as a kid – so I can’t bring myself to throw any away 🤦‍♀️

I am so happy to have had a chance to really go through everything and donate all the items I was no longer using. Its amazing how good it feels to have space in the cupboards and know where everything is and only have the things I use (well except for the buttons 😂😂). Hopefully this has inspired you to give your laundry/linen cupboard a good clean out and maybe to get some labels going. I have really found that labelling helps us as a household keep everything neat and well organised.

ALL ITEMS USED FOR MY LAUNDRY ORGANISATION

  • Timber boxes from Kmart;
  • Frosted Glass bottles from Pretty Little Designs;
  • Glass and cork bottles from Ikea;
  • Lazy Susan from Kmart. I used one from Big W in the kitchen and it was a superior product in my opinion. Big W didn’t have any this time though. If you can find the one from Big W choose that one instead;
  • Clear storage bins from Kmart;
  • Metal clips from Kmart. I used these with labels I made with my Cricut machine.
  • White lidded storage containers from Kmart;
  • White plastic containers from The Organised Housewife. I have also purchased these containers from Pretty Little Designs.
  • Sistema storage box with tray from Woolworths;
  • Tall glass canisters from Kmart for my buttons.
  • I have had the seagrass baskets for a few years now but have found some that are similar from Temple & Webster, Amazon and Spotlight. There are so many beautiful baskets available these days and they can make a real impact on your room. If you need to buy new ones choose some that really suit your style and decor and you will love them for years to come.
