Basic chocolate balls plus 5 variations

Chocolate balls at Christmas time are a must in our household. I have been making the same recipe for years. They’re easy and delicious. Over the last few years I have also been adding in some variations to the basic recipe. This year I have made the basic chocolate balls plus 5 variations. The basic recipe uses only 5 ingredients and one bowl. I love adding chocolate balls to my goody bags for Christmas Day because you can freeze them. This means that I can make them very early in the holiday season 👏👏. If you have a lot of cooking to do like I do that is an absolute must.

Basic chocolate ball recipe

Prep Time30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk coffee biscuits any plain biscuits will work eg. Milk Arrowroot
  • 1 cup desiccated coconut
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 tin condensed milk
  • 3/4 cup milk choc bits for a simple variation you can add white choc bits or a mix of milk dark and white
  • extra coconut for rolling balls into

Instructions

  • Crush biscuits by either putting in a food processor or by putting the biscuits in a ziploc bag and rolling over it with a rolling pin. It doesn't matter if you process fine or have a few chunky bits of biscuit, its all good.
  • Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix together well.
  • Roll into balls and then in to the coconut. You can make whatever size you like. I prefer using about a tablespoon of mixture per ball.

The variations I tried this year are:-

  • Turkish Delight
  • Clinker/marshmallow
  • Caramilk
  • Hazelnut
  • Mint Slice

All variations are based on the basic recipe however I have prepared recipes for them all so that you can easily pin or print the recipe. So check out the basic chocolate balls plus 5 variations.

I really like all the flavours but my favourite would be Turkish Delight followed by the Mint Slice. If you make any let me know what your favourites are. Of course the original basic one will always be the best in my opinion.

Turkish Delight balls

Prep Time30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Marie Biscuits You can use any sweet plain biscuit eg. Milk Arrowroot
  • 1 tin condensed milk
  • 3/4 cup turkish delight
  • 1 cup desiccated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp rosewater essence
  • extra coconut for rolling

Instructions

  • Crush the biscuits in a food processor or crushing in a ziploc bag with a rolling pin.
  • Chop the turkish delight into small bits.
  • Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix well.
  • Roll 1 tablespoon of mixture into a ball and into the extra coconut.

Notes

If, like me you are making a few different varieties of chocolate balls, you can tint your coconut with food colouring to make it easier to distinguish between flavours.  Put your extra coconut in a ziploc bag along with some food colouring.  Mix together – done!

These Turkish Delight balls are amazing. Softer to eat than the other variations because of the turkish delight.

Caramilk/Biscoff balls

Prep Time30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Biscoff biscuits If you can't get these Malt biscuits will work
  • 1 family block of Caramilk chocolate
  • 1 cup desiccated coconut
  • 1 tin condensed milk
  • shredded coconut for rolling

Instructions

  • Crush biscuits using a food processor or rolling pin.
  • Chop the chocolate into very small pieces.
  • Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
  • Toast the shredded coconut under a medium grill. Keep an eye on it though because it toasts very quickly.
  • Roll in shredded coconut.

Notes

I added some gold star sprinkles to the shredded coconut before rolling.

I wasn’t sure how these ones would turn out. The combination of the almost gingery flavour of the biscuits with the caramel of the chocolate is delicious. I’m sure these will end up on my baking list next year too.

Mint Slice balls

Prep Time30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 7 Mint Slice biscuits
  • 2 cups Plain chocolate biscuits I used Delta Creams with the cream part removed.
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1/2 tsp Peppermint essence
  • 1 tin condensed milk
  • 200 g dark chocolate melts

Instructions

  • Process the plain biscuits until finely crushed.
  • Process the Mint Slice biscuits until they are a soft and mushy 🤪
  • Add all ingredients into a bowl and mix to combine well.
  • At this stage you can roll 1 tbsp of mixture in coconut. I chose instead to dip in melted dark chocolate and then top with some Christmas sprinkles.
  • If you want to do the same place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and microwave on 70% power for 20seconds and stir. Repeat until chocolate has melted.

These mint slice balls are to die for. So yummy!!! If you didn’t want to bother with the chocolate dipping, just roll them in coconut and they will still be delicious. You could also tint the coconut green.
