Weekend Getaway to Toowoomba

Finally, after such a long time staying at home we were able to venture out, within Queensland, for a weekend getaway. We chose to go inland with friends and headed to Toowoomba. I’m not going to lie it felt really strange being so far from home after spending so much time in our local area.

Friday’s itinerary

Morning

Our first stop in Toowoomba was James Street Grocer so that we could purchase food for our dinner that night. Wow!!! This cafe is really beautiful and the food was amazing. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. A must do on any visit to Toowoomba.

As our checkin time was 2pm we spent some time shopping in the morning. First up was Harolds Finishing Touches which although only a tiny store had some really great things. We then followed that with a visit to Aussie Antiques which is an absolute treasure trove for those who don’t mind digging around. It is literally packed to the rafters with all sorts of interesting things.

Afternoon

We had planned to visit The Bakers Duck which has a reputation for having great pies and Tony and our friend Ray are big lovers of pies! We were disappointed though as they only do the small pies on Saturdays. Unfortunately they didn’t really have anything else substantial left at that time so we went to one of the other cafes on our list. Milk and Honey was a good second choice. After lunch we spent a long time in Lifelines Vintage Wardrobe in Ruthven Street, which had a fantastic second hand book collection. If you love books and magazines you will love this place. I came out with a big bag filled with both books and magazines. As the name suggests there is also a good vintage clothing section to explore.

Our next stop was Lancaster Antique Centre. There was a lot to look at here but nothing took my fancy this time. Definitely worth a visit though. Our last stop before checking in to Nells was Searchers End. This was more secondhand furniture rather than antiques but it did have some treasures buried in there. I ended up getting some Christmas scrapbooking pages which I am planning on using for my Christmas gift bags this year.

Accommodation

We were lucky enough to find a beautiful place to stay for our weekend getaway, in the refurbished Nell’s Place. The house used to belong to Nell Robinson, the first female Mayor of Queensland. It was in a great location, beautifully clean and very well stocked. There were three bedrooms and the house was very well set out to cater for two couples or a family.

Newtown Park Rose Gardens

After we settled in to Nells we decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather, as they were predicting rain for Saturday. So we headed out to Newtown Park Rose Gardens. Unfortunately we were too early for the roses but over the weekend we were so impressed with all the stunning and tidy gardens in Toowoomba.

Picnic Point Lookout

After Newtown Park we headed to Picnic Point Lookout for a hot chocolate as our last destination for the day. The view was incredible especially at that time of the afternoon. The hot chocolate was pretty good too.

Saturday’s Itinerary

Unfortunately we woke up to dismal weather on Saturday. We did however manage to go to the markets to purchase a few things that were on our list, along with some delicious cookies.

We were going to head to Pioneer Village for the morning but with the weather so bad we headed in to the Cobb & Co Museum. The museum was right near the markets so it was handy at that point in time. If you are interested in history, and particularly transport history, you will love this museum. Its well laid out and has great explanations for everything you see. Really good family activity too.

Thankfully the weather cleared up after lunch and we ventured out to visit a few more parks. We were so impressed by how clean the parks were. It was lovely to see so many people out enjoying them too.

To end the day we had dinner at a great restaurant across the road from Nell’s called Gips. The food was delicious and service was great.

Heading Home

We headed home via Ipswich on Sunday to end our weekend getaway. We stopped for lunch at a place called Fourthchild. Food was really good but we were so absorbed in our eating I forgot to take pics!

Hope you enjoyed this small insight in to our trip to Toowoomba if you would like to know anything drop me a line I will be happy to help if I can.
