3 Nights in beautiful Vienna

The next stop on our European trip was beautiful Vienna and it was amazing. Lucky for us Vienna was still dressed for Christmas. We also had the opportunity to enjoy some more Christmas Markets.

Accommodation in beautiful vienna

We stayed in the centre of Vienna in a one bedroom apartment which we booked through Booking.com.

Day 1 of our 3 nights in Vienna itinerary

We didn’t arrive in Vienna until 3pm so we had a walk around for a few hours. Grabbed a great burger at Rinderwahn. Then we attended a Classical Concert in St Anne’s Church. Now Tony and I are not really classical music fans however this concert was sensational. I highly recommend it particularly if you’re not a classical fan and don’t want to attend one of the larger concerts. It only went for just over an hour too but we loved every minute of it. The Church is small but stunning. This was the perfect way to start our 3 nights in beautiful Vienna.

day 2 of our 3 nights in Vienna Itinerary

Usually we would have booked a private tour for our first day. However I found all the private tours for Vienna way too expensive at that time of the year so we didn’t bother this time. Our first stop was just down the road from our apartment – St Stephan’s Cathedral. The roof was incredible.

We also decided to do a half hour carriage ride. This was a good option because we got to see a lot of things and it helped us find the Christmas markets and some other places we wanted to go back to. I will say that there were some downsides with the carriage ride.

  • The carriage we had was very old and the seats were torn and held together with tape.
  • Our driver was very friendly but he didn’t speak English very well. As the traffic noise was loud we had a hard time trying to work out what he was saying which was a real shame.

Cafe Central

After the carriage ride we headed to Cafe Central, unfortunately we were unable to book a table, so we had a wait of about 30 minutes in the cold. Thankfully once we got inside it was fantastic and so beautiful. We had the best schnitzel there – yum!!! The cakes looked so good but we were really full so we had to buy some to take back to the apartment for later.

Hofburg Palace – Sisi Museum – Imperial Silver Collection

Hofburg Palace was an absolute highlight for me. I love cooking and entertaining so was absolutely amazed at all the items they had on display. There was linen, stunning table centrepieces, silver and various place settings. They also showed how they transported items when the Court travelled. I could post so many photos and go in to so much detail on this section of the museum. It was absolutely fascinating!!! But I’ll save you from that 😂

In the Sisi Museum we were given a glimpse into the life of the empress. You will see from the photos that she had a very small waist!!!

Imperial Treasury

The Treasury is filled with royal finery. The displays span over 1000 years of European History. Its hard to get your head around the history of the items you’re looking at here. There is even a gold cradle that once belonged to Napoleon’s son!

Natural History Museum

We hadn’t planned to visit the Natural History Museum but we had some extra time in our day. It was really worth the visit. The displays were incredible and the building itself was stunning. Highly recommend especially if you have kids travelling with you. They would love it.

Christmas Markets

We were lucky enough to find that Vienna still had some Christmas markets. It was the perfect way to finish the night off before walking home. We found it very easy to get around Vienna by walking and didn’t use public transport the whole visit.

Day 3 of our 3 nights in Vienna itinerary

We booked a skip the line tour of Schonburg Palace for day three. On our way to the Palace it started snowing and the Palace grounds were covered in snow. It looked so magical. Yes, it was very cold too!!!

The bus dropped us off at the Vienna Opera house so we were able to have a look there prior to visiting a beautiful coffee shop by the name of Gerstner. I do love a beautiful coffee shop!!!

After we had a bite to eat we visited St Charle’s Church which of course was stunning and from there we walked around the city for a few hours and stopped to eat at Naschmarkt which is Viennas largest market.

Our last morning in beautiful Vienna

Sadly our time in Vienna came to an end way too quickly. As we weren’t leaving until 10am we went for a quick walk and then grabbed some breakfast. We decided on a traditional Austrian breakfast which was delicious. Of course we had to add a hot chocolate as well!

Foods we loved in vienna

  • Wiener Schnitzel
  • Sachertorte
  • Apfelstrudel (apple strudel)
  • Schinken-kase toast (ham and cheese toastie)
  • Erdapfelpuffer (potato pancake with various toppings)
