Adding board and batten to our hallway
With our kitchen and laundry done we wanted to add character to a boring hallway and entry. We decided to do this by adding board and batten and mouldings around the lounge room entries and openings
We started by having someone remove all the old terracotta coloured tiles from the entry and hallway. So much easier than when we did the kitchen/family room ourselves!!! We then had a tiler lay the same tiles we used in our laundry which were these grey ones.
Attaching the board and batten
Before we started attaching the board and batten we painted the walls. The top half was painted in Dulux Natural White and the bottom was painted in Dulux Vivid White. We then began the process by doing the moulding around the openings, and doors. The next step was installing the skirting and the middle rail.
Finishing the hallway and entry
We added bigger headers to all windows, doors and wall openings. Completing the job involved attaching all the uprights and then caulking everything. The caulking process took a really long time and was pretty fiddly and messy. It did make the whole job look fantastic though so was well worth the hours I put in to it.!!! We changed the front door so that we would get more light into the area. A new light fitting finished the entry off. We chose a replica Marcel Wanders Skygarden which we love.
The hallway now has character
Given the space we had to work with I am extremely happy with how everything worked out. The entry feels spacious even though it isn’t. The colours are neutral and will be a blank canvas for anything we want to do in the future. I love that we were also able to get a “mudroom” just outside the laundry so that we can leave coats, handbags and keys. It definitely helps reduce the dump of things that usually ends up in the kitchen. We have installed a gallery wall to showcase our travel photos and hope to fill the other one in the future.
The difference made to the hallway by adding the board and batten is incredible. Our once dark and dingy hallway and entry is now a light bright welcoming space. Im not going to lie it was a lot of work especially the caulking 😩 but it wasn’t difficult work. Its definitely a fairly straight forward project for anyone who is good with measurements (lucky for me Tony is because I’m not!!). You would also need to be good with the details eg taking time to make sure the timber is straight and equally spaced.
