Do you know what your values are?
The importance of defining your values for true contentment
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to lose sight of who we truly are. Between juggling work, family, social obligations, and personal commitments, many of us feel pulled in so many directions that we forget to ask ourselves: What do I really want? Not in terms of goals or achievements, but on a deeper, more personal level – what values guide the way I live my life? Do you know what your values are? The importance of knowing your core values really is critical for true contentment. I have been checking back in with my values list as part of my wellness journey and making some changes.
What are values?
Values are the core principles that shape how we live, interact, and make decisions. They aren’t the same as goals, which are often short term and achievement focused. Values are about the bigger picture – they are the compass that guides our long term direction, no matter the outcome. When we live in alignment with our values, we feel more grounded and at peace, no matter what challenges or successes come our way.
However, when life gets overwhelming, it’s easy to lose touch with these core principles. We start living on autopilot, focusing on what we think we should be doing, or what others expect of us, rather than staying true to the person we want to be. This is where the disconnect happens, and with it, a growing sense of discontentment or even burnout.
The difference between values and goals
The difference between goals and values is crucial to understand. Goals are specific achievements like “buying a new house” or “getting a promotion at work.” They have a clear end point. Values, on the other hand, are qualities like “creativity,” “brave,” “integrity,” or “playful.” They reflect who you are at your core and remain constant, no matter what life throws at you. While goals can change or be accomplished, values are the enduring traits that guide us through the ups and downs of life.
Do you know what your values are? Do you need help in discovering your values?
One of the best ways to reconnect with yourself is by clarifying your values. I’ve created a set of downloadable worksheets (found in the Planning & Orgranisation Section of the Free Resource Library) to help you dive deep into what really matters to you. These sheets will guide you through a process of reflection, asking questions that will help you identify the values that feel most authentic to you. Completing these worksheets isn’t about finding the “right” answer, everyone’s values are personal to them; it’s about rediscovering what already resides within you. It’s a powerful exercise for anyone feeling off course, unsure, or simply seeking a greater sense of peace and direction.
Clarifying your values isn’t something that happens overnight, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure of where to begin. It’s a process that requires patience and self reflection. Personally, I find that regularly checking back in with what I’ve written helps me stay grounded and aligned with what’s important. Sometimes, I even update my values as I grow or gain new insights about myself. It’s important to remember that values can evolve over time, reflecting who we are in different stages of life. This ongoing process of reflection ensures that we continue living authentically, no matter where life takes us.
By taking the time to reflect and clarify your values, you give yourself the gift of alignment. You’ll find that when your daily actions and decisions match your core values, life feels more satisfying and meaningful. It’s not always easy, and it’s certainly a process, but knowing your values provides a roadmap for a more content, fulfilling life.
Ask yourself these questions
Take a moment today to ask yourself: Am I living in alignment with my values? Do I even know what my values are? If the answers feel uncertain, those downloadable worksheets can help you start the journey toward reconnecting with your true self. After all, the path to contentment begins with knowing who you are and honouring that in everything you do.
