Kitchen Remodel – Part 2
Demo finished – now to rebuild
Once we had finished the demolition part of the kitchen remodel we had to start the install of the new kitchen. Before we could do this we had to move the plumbing as we wanted the sink under the window. This meant taking a jackhammer to the concrete to reroute the plumbing. The picture below shows the finished product after Tony had taken out the concrete and the plumber had done the rerouting. The process was fairly straight forward but very dusty.
After the plumber did his job we also had the electrician make sure that we could get power to the island bench. Once finished we filled the trench with concrete. It was also during this process that we took the opportunity to set out the cabinetry with paint on the floor so that we could ensure we were happy with the final layout. The layout looked better than expected and we were getting excited about how the kitchen remodel will be when its finished.
We installed new sheeting to the walls where required. As we wanted to try and add some more features to the home as we renovated Tony wanted to do a more substantial trim for the window . The windows are 20 year old aluminium framed windows so they really did need a bit of love. The cost to replace them all would have been too much. Replacing the trim involved a wider window sill and trim as you can see in the photo above.
Cabinetry installed – finally
We were now ready for the most significant change to the area – the cabinetry install. We had the cabinets custom made so that we could use the colour that we intended to use as a base throughout the house. The colour that we chose was Dulux Natural White. We used Dulux Vivid White for all the trim work as a contrast. We also went through the whole benchtop debate. I loved the idea of marble however I just didn’t think it would be practical for us. At the time we still had kids coming and going with my daughter and I didn’t want to have to be precious about protecting a benchtop. We decided to go with this one from Caesarstone. Ten years on and I’m so happy with the choice we made, its still as good as it was the day it was installed.
Things are really coming together now. However, cornices still need to be installed, painting done and floors laid. We decided to install timber floating floors and installed them ourselves. The process of choosing the flooring was a bit drawn out. I really wanted a light timber and Tony wanted a darker stain. Finally, I let Tony have his choice as I didn’t hate it and I had chosen everything else for the kitchen. Fair is fair! He still really loves it and I still would have preferred a lighter stain 😁
Tony myself and Emily did the flooring. We made a really good team and the boards went down in no time. We did the underlay first and then installed the timber on top. It was. a click install system so was relatively straight forward. Check out my next post for the finished kitchen. I hope you love it as much as we do.
