DIY Lampshade Makeover
Lamps are not only a functional addition to a room, but they can also be statement pieces that add to the décor. But sometimes, the lampshade itself can be worn out or outdated, making the entire lamp look unappealing. Don’t worry, though, because recovering an old lampshade is an easy and simple task that you can do at home using materials you probably already have. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through the process of how you can DIY a lampshade makeover.
Step One: Choose the fabric
The first step in recovering an old lampshade is to choose the right fabric. You can use almost any type of fabric, but lighter weight fabric such as cotton and linen are easier to work with. If you want to use a heavier fabric, then make sure that your lampshade frame can handle the weight. Remember that lighter-coloured fabric will allow more light to pass through.
Step Two: Prep your lampshade
Before you apply the fabric to your lampshade, you need to clean it thoroughly and remove any traces of old fabric or glue. You also need to measure the height and circumference of your lampshade and cut your fabric accordingly, making sure that you leave an extra inch or two on all sides.
Step Three: Apply glue
With your clean lampshade and well-cut fabric, you’re ready to apply the glue to the fabric. You can use fabric glue or spray adhesive (I used spray adhesive), but it’s essential that you apply it evenly and smoothly so that you don’t end up with bubbles or clumps.
Step 4: Wrap the fabric around the lampshade
Lay the fabric glue side down onto a flat surface and, starting at the seam, carefully wrap the fabric around the lampshade frame. As you wrap the fabric, use your hands to get rid of any bumps or wrinkles. Make sure that the fabric is securely attached to the lampshade, and that there are no loose edges. I used double sided tape to finish the join neatly and fabric glue to roll the rough edges over and hold them in place.
Step 5: Add finishing touches to your DIY lampshade makeover
The last step in recovering your old lampshade is to add some finishing touches. Because the fabric I chose was busy and interesting I didn’t add any extra trims. Some options for trims are:-
- Using a hot glue gun attach a thin strip of coloured ribbon to the top and bottom of the lampshade;
- Adding a tasselled trim to the bottom edge of the shade.
- A trim of small pompoms looks great. The possibilities are endless for your diy lampshade makeover
Its so easy to bring new life to an old lampshade. A fun and easy project that can breathe new life into your home décor. With just a few supplies and some patience, you can create a custom look for your lampshade that will complement your room’s style. Remember to choose the right fabric, prep your lampshade, apply glue evenly, wrap the fabric securely, and add some finishing touches, and you’ll have a beautiful lampshade in no time. Happy crafting!
