I made a moodboard to create a direction for the room. Often things change as I go however its nice to have a starting point.

Install VJ Board on one wall to add Interest

Adding trims to the wall gives you the opportunity to bring interest into a small room without taking up valuable space. We have used different options in our home for example, bead board, board and batten and shiplap. You don’t need to do all the walls as that will add a lot of expense. Using one as a feature is much more cost effective.

VJ Board is an easy DIY job too. You can purchase sheets of VJ board at the hardware store or you can make it yourself. If you want a more detailed tutorial you will find one here and here.

Make inexpensive changes to furniture to give a new fresh look

In this room I had three items of furniture that we would make changes too.

  • Antique chest of drawers – see how we transformed this here.
  • Old bed that we repainted.
  • A vintage cupboard that we added feet to so that it was a more accessible height for a side table.

Painting the bed

For this room I decided to use a colour I haven’t used before and that is black. Black is still a neutral colour so I thought it would work really nicely with natural coloured linen. I think the colour change has really updated the look of the old bed. Not bad for less than $60 and a few hours work. Once painted I sealed the bed with clear varnish. FYI: It took 5 coats for the bed to be covered properly. I used chalk paint and then a clear satin finish sealer I have used on previous projects. Next time I use black paint however I would use wax to seal. Although I love the look of the bed the sealer did seem to leave a few blemishes.

Transform old Vinyl Wardrobe Sliding Doors

As a builder grade home this room has a built in wardrobe with vinyl sliding doors. The doors work well and we did not want the expense of replacing. However, really wanted to try and upgrade them. As we have used the shaker door profile throughout our other renovations we wanted to keep things consistent. See what we did here.

The Easiest updates for any bedroom – New bed linen and Blinds

These items are our splurge items. If you have followed me for a while you will know that I am obsessed with remote controlled blinds. The look of them along with the convenience of the remote makes them one of my favourite home upgrades. Obviously that meant I would be including one in this room. I chose a neutral fabric that has a basketweave pattern to add a little texture.

For the bedding I wanted to include some natural linen sheets and doona cover. I chose to use a company called I Love Linen (not sponsored). I wanted to keep the linen neutral but to add a little pop. Stripes were the answer. This is what I chose for the sheets. For the doona cover I went with a natural linen colour. The addition of a mustard coloured throw rug and decorative pillow finished the look.

The reveal -Easy Updates for any Bedroom

I love how everything has come together in this space. My favourite is definitely the change in the wardrobe doors. But the furniture makeovers turned out great too. Its hard to believe that the only new items were the linen and the blind. The artwork on either side of the window came from the Op Shop for $3 each and the landscape painting, we have had for a few years along with the large timber mirror. Originally I was going to purchase a black framed mirror for above the chest which would have looked great but happy to use something I had on hand.

On the list to do in this room is make a linen striped cushion for the chair as well as add some artwork or something decorative to the wall opposite the bedhead.
