How to makeover your wardrobe doors in a weekend

If you’re like me, you love a good DIY project. Especially one that can be completed in a weekend and makes a big impact. Today, I’m going to show you how to makeover your wardrobe doors in a weekend! All you need are some basic materials and tools. So read on for all the details, and get ready to start your weekend project!

Where we started

The wardrobe doors in this spare bedroom were plain vinyl doors and I hated them. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money replacing them but they definitely needed a makeover. Tony and I discussed how we could add some interest with making the doors too heavy.

In the rest of our home we have used the shaker profile for cabinetry so we decided that this would be a good option here.

Making the changes

We used 3mm MDF we found at Bunnings. Next up we measured the size of the profile of our existing cabinets and replicated it. For us it was 60mm. We also used a 3mm spacer between the middle pieces to make it appear like two doors.

We used Selleys Aquadhere with some dots of superglue which held the timber in place perfectly. Initially we were going to just do the timber around the outside like our kitchen doors. However, once we started laying the timber pieces out we decided it need a bit more.

Paint makes all the difference

As we were painting over vinyl I made sure to use a good undercoat so the paint would adhere properly. Next up was two coats of the paint we use for all our timber trims – Dulux Lexicon Quarter.
