Before and After cabinet transformation

We have had this timber cabinet outside for years. I used it as a library of sorts for all of our unread books because we had nowhere inside for them. With the office renovation that has now changed. So enjoy our before and after cabinet transformation.

Its hard to tell from this picture but the cabinet had small mould spots all over it especially on the lower half. The inset top was also a problem in terms of displaying anything on top of the cabinet.

A few months ago we purchased a broken door from a salvage yard. The timber was fabulous and we had the outside of the door leftover. Tony, being the one who is tasked with making my ideas come to life😂, constructed a new top and I asked him to include the old keyhole for interest. I think it looks amazing!!

Transforming the old cabinet

A lot of sanding was needed to get the timber into great shape. Unfortunately the colour of the timber was still a bit orange for me so I decided to try bleaching it. This was my first time bleaching timber but it wont be my last!

The first image above is the cabinet in its original condition. The second one is after it was well sanded and coated with two coats of bleach. I used household bleach and a paint brush to brush it on. Make sure you also wear a mask and gloves to protect yourself.

How beautiful are those doors!

The old cabinet hardware was not in great condition but I loved the fact that each side had different hinges and the push centre door opening was really different too. We attempted to clean then up with a wire brush but it didn’t work. So out came the Rub n Buff and it worked fantastically well. It actually suits the living room where we will be using it better than the original hardware.

The finished product

I am so happy with the finished product and its amazing storage for my crystal collection. So it’s a win for me.

The fun part was decorating the beautiful new timber top with some vintage finds from our trip to Daylesford in April. I particularly love the brass oil burner, I have never seen anything like it before so I had to snap it up.

Tony have I have done a big renovation on this living room with the installation of cabinetry for our frame tv. If you would love to do your own builtins have a look at this post. We also did a full restyle of the space and you can see that here.
