Living a Joyful Life: Why Celebrations Matter More Than We Think
Over the past few years, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what makes a life feel rich and meaningful.
Not richer in the financial sense.
Richer in experiences.
Richer in memories.
Richer in connection.
As I’ve moved through different seasons of life, I’ve realised that some of the moments I treasure most aren’t the grand achievements or major milestones.
They’re the moments gathered around a table.
The birthday dinners.
The Christmas celebrations.
The baby showers.
The Sunday lunches.
The impromptu cups of tea shared with a friend.
They’re the moments that bring people together.
And the more I reflect on it, the more I realise that creating those moments has quietly become one of the great joys of my life.
The Things We Remember
When I look back over the years, I don’t remember every project I completed or every item I bought.
I remember the people.
I remember Christmas lunches overflowing with food and laughter.
I remember birthday cakes made for people I love.
I remember sitting around the table long after the meal was finished playing board games.
I remember family gatherings in the backyard and celebrations that brought generations together.
Those are the moments that stay with us.
Not because they were perfect.
But because they made us feel connected.
Why Celebrations Matter More Than We Think
For a long time, I thought of celebrations as something separate from everyday life.
Something reserved for weddings, milestone birthdays or special occasions.
But I’ve come to believe that celebrations are much bigger than that.
Celebrations are how we acknowledge life’s important moments.
They give us a reason to gather.
They create traditions.
They strengthen relationships.
They help us pause long enough to appreciate the people around us.
A beautifully set table.
Fresh flowers from the garden.
A favourite family recipe.
A handwritten place card.
None of these things are essential.
Yet somehow they help transform an ordinary gathering into a memory.
The Joy of Creating Beautiful Moments
One thing I’ve always loved is creating spaces where people feel welcome.
Sometimes that has looked like renovating a room.
Sometimes it’s been preparing food for a crowd.
Sometimes it’s decorating a Christmas table.
And sometimes it’s simply lighting a candle and setting the table for family dinner.
The details themselves aren’t the point.
The feeling they create is.
A welcoming home.
A sense of belonging.
An invitation to slow down and enjoy each other’s company.
Over the years I’ve realised that creating beautiful moments doesn’t require perfection or a huge budget.
It simply requires intention.
Home, Food and Gathering Around the Table
Many of the things I’ve shared on this blog over the years have been connected by a common thread, even when I didn’t realise it at the time.
The recipes.
The tablescapes.
The home projects.
The organising ideas.
The holiday traditions.
At their heart, they’ve all been about creating a life that feels welcoming, comfortable and connected.
A home where people want to gather.
Food that brings people together.
Spaces that encourage conversation and celebration.
A New Chapter
As I’ve reflected on what I want this next chapter of A Joyful Ordinary Life to look like, one theme keeps appearing again and again:
Celebration.
Not celebration in the extravagant sense.
Celebration as connection.
Celebration as hospitality.
Celebration as creating meaningful moments with the people we love.
It’s something I’ve been passionate about for many years, often without even realising it.
From hosting family gatherings and creating Christmas traditions to planning baby showers and milestone celebrations, I’ve always found joy in bringing people together.
And recently, that passion has grown into something new.
Something that I’m incredibly excited to share with you soon.
A project that combines my love of gathering, entertaining, styling and celebrating life’s special moments.
A project born from the belief that creating beautiful celebrations doesn’t need to be overwhelming.
I’ll be sharing more about that very soon.
What You Can Expect Moving Forward
A Joyful Ordinary Life will continue to be a place where we talk about:
- Recipes for sharing
- Home and garden inspiration
- Simple living
- Meaningful traditions
- Tablescapes and entertaining
- Living well in your 50s and beyond
- Creating a beautiful life on a realistic budget
But you’ll also notice a stronger focus on gathering, celebrating and creating memorable experiences.
Because the more I learn, the more convinced I become that life’s greatest joys are rarely found in things.
They’re found in people.
In shared meals.
In family traditions.
In celebrations both big and small.
And in the memories we create together.
Final Thoughts
If there’s one thing this season of life has taught me, it’s that the moments worth celebrating aren’t always the biggest ones.
Sometimes they’re as simple as:
A birthday cake.
A long lunch.
A table filled with family.
A baby soon to arrive.
A Christmas gathering.
A cup of tea shared with a friend.
These ordinary moments become the stories we tell and the memories we carry with us.
And perhaps that’s what living a joyful life is really about.
Not waiting for special occasions.
But creating them.
If part of your vision for living a more joyful life includes bringing family and friends together more often, I’ve written a blog post sharing the entertaining essentials that make creating a beautiful and welcoming table both simple and affordable. The post also includes a free printable entertaining essentials checklist to help you build your collection over time and feel confident hosting whenever the opportunity arises.

You have always been so good at doing exactly all of the above Anita so I am sure this is a natural progression for you!
Thank you so much for that vote of confidence Leonie. I am definitely excited to share what I’ve been doing.
