Master Bedroom Makeover Ideas for a Cozy and Timeless Space
A master bedroom should feel like a retreat from the rest of the home — calm, comfortable and reflective of your personal style. Since it’s one of the most used spaces in the house, creating a room that feels both functional and relaxing can make such a difference to everyday life.
For our master bedroom makeover, we wanted to create a soft and timeless space with a vintage feel while still keeping the room practical and cozy. Rather than replacing everything, we focused on thoughtful updates that added warmth, texture and character to the room.
If you’re planning your own master bedroom makeover, these ideas may help inspire your space.
The Before
Before starting this master bedroom makeover, the room felt dated and lacked the warmth and layered feel we wanted to create. While the space had good bones, it needed softness, texture and a more cohesive style.
Tony and I both love vintage furniture and timeless interiors, so it was important that the room still reflected that relaxed vintage feel rather than following fast-moving trends.
Planning Our Master Bedroom Makeover
Before purchasing anything new, we made a clear list of the updates we wanted to make to the room.
Our plans included:
- Adding wallpaper behind the bed
- Bringing in a vintage French bed we found at an antique store
- Restoring the existing chest of drawers
- Transforming a vintage cupboard into handbag storage
- Adding a large neutral rug
- Installing motorised roman blinds and sheer curtains
- Updating the bedding and soft furnishings
By planning carefully, we were able to create a room that felt layered and beautiful without needing to replace everything.
Restoring Vintage Furniture
One of my favourite parts of this master bedroom makeover was restoring existing furniture pieces rather than buying brand new items.
The first project was refurbishing an old timber cupboard so Tony could convert it into handbag and clutch storage for me. All it needed was sanding, freshening up the hardware and some internal organisation.
Tony used MDF to create custom storage with removable uprights so the cupboard could accommodate different handbag sizes. It completely transformed the functionality of the piece while still keeping its vintage charm.
While working on the cupboard, I also sanded back the existing chest of drawers and cleaned up the hardware to give it a fresh new look.
I love projects like this because the transformation can be dramatic without spending a lot of money.
Wallpaper Feature Wall
The wallpaper feature wall was one of the biggest changes in the room and instantly made the space feel softer and more luxurious.
I knew I wanted a floral wallpaper with a vintage feel that would create a calm and elegant atmosphere without overwhelming the room. Wallpaper adds so much warmth and texture to a bedroom, especially when paired with neutral furnishings.
If you’re considering wallpaper for your own bedroom makeover, it’s such a beautiful way to create a focal point in the space.
We also shared a full tutorial showing how we hung the wallpaper ourselves.

Adding a Neutral Rug
This was actually the first time we added a rug to our bedroom, and it made such a difference to how warm and cozy the room feels.
Because the wallpaper already added pattern and texture, I wanted the rug to remain soft and neutral. After searching for quite a while, I eventually found the perfect vintage-inspired rug on Etsy.
The subtle tones helped ground the room while still allowing the wallpaper to remain the feature.
Updating an Armchair with a Linen Cover
When planning this bedroom makeover, I was very mindful about not replacing furniture unnecessarily.
Instead of purchasing a new armchair, I decided to reuse an older Ikea chair we already owned and simply update it with a new linen slipcover.
I ordered the cover from The Styled Sofa and chose the colour Annecy, which worked beautifully with the soft vintage tones throughout the room.
The transformation was incredible and helped the chair feel completely custom without the expense of buying something new.
Roman Blinds and Sheer Curtains
Window coverings make such a difference in a bedroom makeover and can completely change how soft and welcoming a room feels.
Our first choice for window furnishings is always motorised roman blinds because they’re practical, elegant and help keep the room feeling uncluttered.
For the smaller window, I chose a neutral stripe fabric from Tuiss Blinds Online called Grande Stripe Linen with blackout lining to help create a restful sleeping environment.
For the large sliding door, we used a pure linen roman blind with blockout lining and added sheer curtains over the top to soften the space even further.
The combination of roman blinds and sheers created a layered and cozy feel that works perfectly with the vintage style of the room.
You’ll find all the curtains, blinds and home decor pieces featured in this makeover linked on my Shop My Favourites page.
Styling the Bed Linen
Because the wallpaper was already such a feature in the room, I decided to keep the bedding very neutral and understated.
I layered:
- Crisp white sheets
- A white bedspread
- Pom pom detail pillowcases
- Scalloped European pillow covers
- A vintage sheet we found in France
- A monogrammed cushion with soft pink piping
Layering different textures while keeping the palette neutral helped create a calm and timeless look without competing with the wallpaper.
Final Thoughts on Our Master Bedroom Makeover
This master bedroom makeover took time, but it was absolutely worth the effort. By combining vintage furniture, soft textures, wallpaper and layered window furnishings, we created a bedroom that feels calm, cozy and reflective of our style.
One of the things I love most about this room is that it doesn’t feel overly styled or trendy. Instead, it feels personal, warm and lived in — exactly how I believe a home should feel.
We also used wallpaper in our office makeover, which you can read about here if you love layered and cozy interiors.
