Easy Bedroom Updates on a Budget That Make a Big Impact
Updating a bedroom doesn’t have to involve a full renovation or a huge budget. Sometimes the simplest changes can completely transform a space and make it feel fresh, cozy and much more personal.
Whether you’re refreshing a guest room, styling a master bedroom or updating a smaller space, there are so many affordable ways to give a bedroom a whole new look. From DIY wall treatments to furniture makeovers and updated bedding, these easy bedroom updates can make a surprisingly big impact without replacing everything.
This bedroom makeover focused on using what we already had wherever possible while layering in warmth, texture and character.
Add Interest with VJ Board or Wall Panelling
One of the easiest ways to make a bedroom feel more custom and elevated is by adding wall panelling.
For this room, we chose VJ board as a feature wall to bring texture and character into the space without overwhelming the room. Wall panelling is especially helpful in smaller bedrooms because it adds visual interest without taking up valuable floor space.
Throughout our home we’ve used several different wall treatments including:
- VJ board
- Board and batten
- Beadboard
- Shiplap
Rather than panelling every wall, creating a single feature wall is often far more budget-friendly while still making a huge difference.
VJ board is also a very achievable DIY project. You can either purchase ready-made sheets from the hardware store or create the look yourself with MDF trims.
Refresh Existing Furniture Instead of Replacing It
One of the biggest money-saving tips when updating a bedroom is to work with the furniture you already own wherever possible.
For this room, we transformed several older pieces rather than replacing them:
- An antique chest of drawers
- An old bed frame
- A vintage cupboard used as a bedside table
Not only does this save money, but it also creates a more collected and personal feel rather than a room filled entirely with brand-new furniture.
Painting an Old Bed for a Modern Look
The bed makeover completely changed the feel of this room.
For this project, I stepped outside my usual comfort zone and painted the bed black. Although black can feel bold, it still works beautifully as a neutral and pairs perfectly with natural linen and timber tones.
The transformation made the bed feel far more modern while still keeping its vintage charm.
To update the bed, I used:
- Chalk paint
- A clear satin sealer
- Five coats of paint for full coverage
The entire project cost less than $60 and only took a few hours of work.
One thing I would change next time is using wax instead of clear sealer over black paint, as I found the sealer slightly marked in some areas.
Upgrade Builder-Grade Wardrobe Doors
One of the best updates in this room was transforming the original vinyl sliding wardrobe doors.
Like many builder-grade homes, this room had very plain vinyl wardrobe doors that functioned perfectly well but looked dated. Replacing them entirely would have been expensive, so instead we decided to update them with a DIY shaker-style makeover.
Because we’ve used shaker profiles throughout the rest of our renovations, this helped create consistency throughout the home while dramatically improving the look of the room.
You can see the full tutorial in our Wardrobe Door Makeover post.
It honestly became one of my favourite transformations in the entire space.
Invest in Bedding and Window Coverings
While most of the updates in this room were budget-friendly DIY projects, the bedding and blinds were our main investment pieces.
If you’ve followed along for a while, you’ll know how much I love motorised blinds. Not only do they look clean and modern, but the convenience of remote-controlled blinds makes them one of my favourite home upgrades.
For this room, I chose:
- A neutral basketweave blind fabric
- Natural linen bedding
- Striped linen sheets
- A neutral doona cover
- A mustard throw rug and cushion for warmth
Layering soft textures in neutral tones instantly made the room feel cozy and inviting.
We used linen bedding from I Love Linenand absolutely love the relaxed feel it gives the space.

Style with Affordable Decor and Vintage Finds
One of my favourite things about this bedroom makeover is that many of the styling pieces were either vintage finds or items we already owned.
The artwork beside the window came from the op shop for only a few dollars each, while the landscape painting and timber mirror had already been in our home for years.
Originally I planned to purchase a new black-framed mirror, but using what we already had ended up working beautifully and kept the space feeling more personal.
I truly believe a home feels warmer and more authentic when it reflects the people living in it rather than looking perfectly styled or overly trend-focused.
Final Thoughts on Easy Bedroom Updates
You don’t need a huge renovation budget to create a beautiful bedroom. Small DIY projects, furniture makeovers and thoughtful styling changes can completely transform a space while still keeping it functional and comfortable.
This room proves that:
- Paint can dramatically update furniture
- Builder-grade features can often be improved rather than replaced
- Vintage finds add warmth and personality
- Simple texture and layering create a cozy atmosphere
Sometimes the best spaces are created slowly over time using pieces you already love. You can see the update to the Master Bedroom here.
