How to Add More Storage at Home Without Extending

Finding more storage at home can feel almost impossible, especially when you’re working with a smaller house and limited cupboard space. Over time, things like tools, Christmas decorations, entertaining supplies and DIY equipment slowly start taking over every spare corner of the home.

For us, the biggest challenge was finding extra storage without extending the house or sacrificing valuable living space. The solution ended up being a well-organised garden shed that worked not only as storage, but also as a functional workshop.

This project completely changed how our home functions and helped us create a much calmer and more organised living environment.

Why We Needed More Storage at Home

If you’ve followed along for a while, you’ll know our home isn’t huge. Over the years, I’ve worked really hard to improve organisation and make better use of the space we do have.

Our old garden shed simply wasn’t working anymore. It leaked, lacked proper storage and had become completely impractical.

The goal was to:

  • Replace the old shed with something larger and more functional
  • Create organised storage for household items
  • Give Tony a dedicated workshop space
  • Free up storage space inside the house
  • Keep everything neat and easy to access

Having designated storage areas makes such a difference to how calm and manageable a home feels.

Choosing the Right Garden Shed

After researching different options, we chose a shed from EasyShed Australia that suited both our size requirements and the style of our backyard.

Because we were building within the footprint of the old shed area, our size options were somewhat limited. We eventually selected one that was classified as a small garage.

The colour we chose was Monument, a dark grey that ties in beautifully with the black, white and green colour palette we’ve been using throughout the backyard makeover.

One of the reasons this shed worked so well for us was the dual access:

  • One single access door
  • One double access door

This made the shed much more functional for both storage and workshop use.

Shed Add-Ons Worth Considering

When ordering the shed, we also selected several optional extras that made a huge difference to functionality.

Fibreglass Skylight

We added a fibreglass skylight over Tony’s workshop area to bring in natural light.

It works brilliantly and makes the space much brighter during the day, although it can become quite hot underneath during summer, so that’s definitely something to consider before installing one.

Decorative Roof Finials

These were purely decorative, but they helped the shed feel a little more finished and intentional rather than just a standard utility building.

Tool Hooks

Adding wall hooks made storing larger tools far easier and helped maximise wall space.

Building the Shed Subfloor

Because our previous shed already sat on a timber subfloor, we decided to reuse and extend the existing structure to save money.

Tony expanded the subfloor to fully utilise the available space inside the fenced area.

For the flooring we used:

  • 19mm Yellow Tongue flooring inside the shed
  • Treated pine decking around the exterior

Adding the surrounding deck made the shed feel much more integrated into the backyard rather than looking like a standalone storage building.

Constructing the Garden Shed

Building a shed is one of those projects that feels simple in theory but always seems to come with a few unexpected challenges.

This particular shed was:

  • Quite large
  • Very tall
  • Constructed during lockdown

Unfortunately, lockdown meant we couldn’t get additional help when we needed it, which definitely made the process more difficult.

Once completed, we had a couple of small issues to solve:

  • A minor roof leak where the roof sections joined
  • Double doors scraping slightly on the decking

Tony fixed the leak using a roof leak sealant, which solved the issue completely.

For the doors, he removed them and trimmed the length slightly using tin snips before shortening the channels to suit.

Organising the Shed Interior

The fit-out stage was where the shed really started to become functional.

Flooring

For the shed flooring, we chose gym flooring tiles from Bunnings Warehouse.

They’ve been perfect because they:

  • Feel softer underfoot
  • Protect items from damage
  • Help the shed feel more finished

Dividing the Shed Into Two Zones

The shed was designed to serve two purposes:

  • My organised storage area
  • Tony’s workshop

To divide the space, we positioned two large shelving units back-to-back.

The shelving came from Apple Shelving and worked perfectly for separating the two functional zones.

Creating an Organised Storage System

One of the most important things for me was creating a shed that stayed organised long-term.

I strongly believe that:

  • Everything should have a home
  • Labels make organisation easier
  • A space is easier to maintain when it looks good

To keep the shed cohesive, we chose black storage containers and shelving accessories throughout the entire space.

Storage Containers

We used heavy-duty storage crates from Target Australia in three different sizes:

  • 30L
  • 57L
  • 100L

While the shelf dimensions didn’t quite work exactly as planned once the side rails were factored in, the system still ended up functioning really well.

Workshop Storage

For Tony’s workshop area, we added several storage systems from the Pinnacle Hardware range available at Bunnings.

These included:

  • Heavy-duty drawer systems
  • Mobile storage units
  • Small compartment organisers for screws and hardware

We also customised labels for the storage bins — Tony requested a “manly” font for his side, while I chose something softer for mine.

Making the Shed Exterior Feel More Stylish

One thing that was really important to me was ensuring the shed didn’t become an eyesore in the backyard.

Adding the surrounding deck helped enormously because it made the shed feel more like part of the overall garden design rather than a purely functional structure.

Choosing the Monument colour also tied the shed into the rest of the exterior palette we’ve been using throughout our backyard renovations.

Eventually we’ll stain the decking as well, which will soften the overall look even further.

Why a Garden Shed Is One of the Best Storage Solutions

A well-designed garden shed can completely transform how your home functions.

Not only does it create more storage, but it also:

  • Frees up indoor cupboards
  • Reduces clutter inside the house
  • Creates a dedicated workshop area
  • Helps keep seasonal items organised
  • Makes it easier to maintain a tidy home

For us, it has made a huge difference not having to store things like Christmas decorations and tools inside the house anymore.

Final Thoughts on Finding More Storage at Home

If you’re struggling with storage at home, don’t automatically assume you need an extension or bigger house.

Sometimes the answer is simply:

  • Better organisation
  • Dedicated storage zones
  • Functional shelving
  • A properly planned garden shed

This project has genuinely improved how our home functions every single day, and I’m beyond happy with how organised the space has remained.

It’s practical, functional and fits beautifully into the overall style of our backyard — exactly what we hoped for. For some renovation inspiration check out this post on a table makeover.
