How to Have a Party at Home: Easy Tips for Hosting a Large Birthday Celebration
If you’ve ever wondered how to have a party at home without feeling completely overwhelmed, trust me, you’re not alone.
When my gorgeous daughter Emily and I realised we would be celebrating my 50th birthday and her 21st birthday at the same time, we had a big decision to make. Should we host separate celebrations or attempt one giant party for two very different age groups?
To make things even more interesting, our birthday also happens to be my wedding anniversary with Tony.
In the end, Emily and I decided a joint party made the most sense. It meant less stress, less preparation, and most importantly, it allowed me to actually enjoy the celebration instead of spending the entire night working.
The challenge was figuring out how to host more than 100 people at home while making sure everyone had a great time.
Planning a Party at Home
Whenever I start planning a party, the very first thing I decide is the overall style of the event.
With over 100 guests attending, I knew this celebration needed to feel relaxed and casual rather than formal. A sit-down meal simply wasn’t practical, so I decided a self-serve food bar would work best.
The next step was choosing a colour theme.
For this party we went with:
- Pink
- Gold
- White
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you don’t need to spend a fortune on decorations to create a beautiful party atmosphere.
Because I host several gatherings each year, I’ve slowly built a collection of reusable decorations in different colours and styles. For each new event, I simply add a few fresh pieces to mix in with what I already own.
It keeps costs down while still creating a completely new look each time.
Easy Party Decorations for Home Entertaining
The decorations for this party were intentionally simple because I didn’t want to spend hours setting everything up on the day.
Party Banners
I used:
- A pink happy birthday banner I’ve owned for years
- A build-your-own banner from Kmart above the cocktail bar
- A “Celebrate” banner from my existing party collection
DIY Party Backdrops
For the backdrops, I kept things incredibly budget-friendly.
I used:
- Crepe paper streamers
- String
- A stapler
- Tissue paper flowers
The tissue flowers were attached with staples and layered to create colourful statement walls behind the entertaining areas.
Lighting Makes a Huge Difference
One of the best things you can add to any evening party is lighting.
We hung party lights wherever possible throughout the backyard and patio areas. It instantly made the entire space feel warm, festive, and inviting.
We also added illuminated number lights which became a real focal point of the party.
Creating Different Spaces for Guests
One of the best decisions we made was setting up several different entertaining areas around the backyard and patio.
This allowed guests to naturally gather in spaces that suited them best.
Relaxed Patio Lounge Area
Our outdoor sectional lounge became a popular spot for many of the adults, possibly because it was positioned directly opposite the cocktail bar.
Cozy Space for the Younger Guests
On Emily’s cabin deck, we created a more relaxed area using mattresses, cushions, and a small fire pit. It gave the younger guests a comfortable place to sit, chat, and enjoy the evening.
Fire Pit Area
We also set up a larger fire pit in the backyard complete with seating and supplies for making s’mores.
It created such a relaxed atmosphere later in the evening.
Karaoke and Dancing Area
A marquee was positioned in the centre of the yard with a karaoke machine ready for dancing and entertainment later in the night.
Thankfully, there’s very little photographic evidence of the karaoke portion of the evening.
Making Entertaining Easier
When hosting a large party at home, outsourcing a few things can make a huge difference.
Hiring a Photographer
I hired a photographer for the early part of the evening which allowed everyone to relax and enjoy the event without worrying about capturing photos.
Hiring a Cocktail Bar Service
One of the best decisions we made was hiring a mobile cocktail bar company to handle drinks and glassware.
They arrived with:
- The bar setup
- Glassware
- Cocktail equipment
- Everything needed for service and cleanup
All we needed to do was purchase the alcohol and select the cocktails we wanted served.
It made the evening run so smoothly and meant nobody was stuck making drinks all night.
Setting Up Food Tables
For a casual party like this, there’s no need for formal table settings, but I still like the food tables to feel organised and visually appealing.
I almost always begin with white tablecloths because:
- They work with every colour theme
- They look fresh and clean
- They’re easy to maintain and bleach if needed
Label Everything
For buffet or food bar setups, labels make a huge difference.
I used:
- Chalkboard labels
- Painted picture frames
- Simple printed food signs and instructions
Not only did it help guests navigate the food easily, but it also made the buffet tables look more styled and cohesive.
Disposable Entertaining Essentials
With over 100 guests attending, disposable plates, napkins, and coffee cups were definitely the practical option.
I simply chose them in our pink, gold, and white colour palette so everything still felt coordinated and festive.
Simple Entertaining Can Still Feel Special
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned about hosting large parties at home is that people remember the atmosphere far more than perfection.
Good food, comfortable spaces, music, laughter, and thoughtful details are what truly make a celebration memorable.
And apparently, I have far too much to say about party planning because the food deserves an entire post of its own.
