Secret Garden Backyard Makeover: Creating a Cozy Outdoor Fireplace Area
When we first started planning our backyard renovation, we knew one thing for certain — we didn’t want it to feel like a collection of disconnected outdoor spaces.
We wanted the entire backyard to feel cohesive.
Calm.
Layered.
Welcoming.
And most importantly, designed for the way we actually live and entertain.
Because we’re lucky enough to have a fairly large backyard for a suburban block, we decided early on to break the renovation into zones and complete it gradually as a series of connected projects.
This first space became what we now lovingly call our Secret Garden backyard makeover — a cozy fireplace area tucked beneath the trees where we gather with family and friends throughout the year.
And honestly, it may be one of my favourite spaces we’ve ever created.
Planning a Cohesive Backyard Makeover
Before we started renovating anything, we spent a lot of time planning how we wanted the entire backyard to feel.
Rather than designing each space separately, we created an overall palette and style direction that would flow consistently across every zone.
Throughout the backyard, we chose to focus on:
- black and charcoal tones
- soft greys
- crisp whites
- layered greenery
- natural textures
We wanted every area to feel connected while still serving a different purpose.
Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing the full backyard makeover series including:
- the pool deck
- the outdoor bar and alfresco area
- the French garden
- the guest cabin
- and the final transformation of the remaining backyard spaces
But this Secret Garden renovation was where it all began.
The Before: A Tired and Uninviting Backyard Space
Before the renovation, this area was honestly one of the least usable spaces in the backyard.
The entire section was covered in fine pebble, which constantly:
- collected leaves
- moved underfoot
- felt messy
- became difficult to maintain
And because the space sits beneath large established trees, cleaning it was an ongoing frustration.
The area had potential because of the beautiful mature trees overhead, but it lacked structure, comfort, and purpose.
It certainly wasn’t somewhere we wanted to spend time entertaining.
Creating Our Dream Outdoor Fireplace Area
Once we started planning the space properly, everything changed.
We envisioned a cozy outdoor area that felt slightly European-inspired — somewhere warm and inviting where family could gather around the fire for long lunches, celebrations, and evenings outdoors.
The fireplace quickly became the heart of the design.
We built a large outdoor fireplace which instantly anchored the entire area and gave the space a sense of purpose and intimacy.
Around the fireplace, we created:
- comfortable sofa seating
- layered outdoor cushions
- soft lighting
- relaxed conversation areas
I really wanted the space to feel welcoming rather than overly formal.
Somewhere people could genuinely relax.
Adding the “Le Jardin” Entry Arbour
One of my favourite additions to this makeover was the entry arbour.
We built a black arbour leading into the space and added a sign that reads:
“Le Jardin.”
It instantly gave the area a sense of arrival and made the Secret Garden feel like its own little destination within the backyard.
I love creating spaces that feel slightly hidden and layered rather than everything being immediately visible all at once.
The arbour helps separate the entertaining space from the rest of the yard while still allowing everything to flow together naturally.
Why We Chose Paving for the Secret Garden
One of the best decisions we made during this renovation was paving the main entertaining areas of the Secret Garden.
Originally the entire space was covered in fine pebble, which constantly:
- collected leaves
- moved underfoot
- felt messy
- became difficult to maintain beneath the trees
Because this section of the backyard sits under large established trees, cleaning the loose pebles quickly became frustrating and time consuming.
For the areas we actively use for entertaining, we chose large pavers which completely transformed both the practicality and appearance of the space.
Now:
- leaves are easy to sweep
- furniture feels stable
- the area feels cleaner and more finished
- entertaining is much easier
However, we didn’t pave every single section of the garden. Behind the large tree, where we don’t really use the space for seating or entertaining, we decided to keep a pebble area instead.
This time though, we chose a much more solid pebble and used a mulch glue product in the areas where the pebble joins the paving. This helped stabilise the surface, reduced movement, and made leaf clean-up far easier while still keeping that softer garden feel around the trees.
I actually love the balance this created — structured paved entertaining zones combined with softer natural textures around the garden edges. It helps the space feel polished without losing the relaxed garden atmosphere we wanted.
Outdoor Furniture and Protective Covers
Because this area sits beneath mature trees, we also had to think carefully about protecting the outdoor furniture long-term.
Birds, bats, falling leaves, and general outdoor debris are all realities when you have beautiful established trees in your backyard.
So we invested in custom outdoor furniture covers — and honestly, they’ve been one of the best practical decisions we made.
The covers are:
- durable
- thick
- custom-fitted
- far better quality than standard hardware store options
They allow us to properly protect the furniture while still enjoying the beauty and shade the trees provide.
And for us, the trees were absolutely worth designing around because they create so much atmosphere and natural beauty in the space.
If you’re looking for quality outdoor furniture covers I highly recommend these ones.
A Backyard Designed for Family Gatherings
At the centre of the Secret Garden, we added a large extendable dining table so the area could comfortably host family lunches, celebrations, and relaxed outdoor dinners.
That was always the priority for us:
creating spaces that encourage people to gather.
The combination of:
- the fireplace
- relaxed seating
- layered greenery
- soft lighting
- and dining space
…has turned this once forgotten corner into one of the most loved areas of our home.
It feels cozy during winter evenings around the fire but still fresh and open during the warmer months.
Final Thoughts on Our Secret Garden Backyard Makeover
Looking back at the before photos now, it’s hard to believe this is the same space.
What was once messy, impractical, and largely unused has become a warm and welcoming outdoor retreat that feels deeply connected to how we live as a family.
And honestly, I think that’s the key to any successful renovation:
creating spaces that truly support your everyday life rather than simply looking beautiful in photos.
This Secret Garden was the beginning of our larger backyard transformation, and next in the series I’ll be sharing the renovation of the outdoor bar and alfresco area — otherwise known in our house as the man cave. In the meantime you can see how we set this area up for a Christmas Cocktail Party.
