Marketplace Desk Upgrade: How to Transform a Second-Hand Desk for a Beautiful Home Office

When we decided to renovate our shared office space, we knew the desk would be one of the most important pieces in the room. It needed to be large, practical, and offer plenty of storage—without blowing the budget.

I had fallen in love with a desk from Pottery Barn, but with a full renovation ahead of us, it simply wasn’t a realistic option. So, like many of my projects, I went searching for a more affordable alternative.

After a few weeks of scrolling through Facebook Marketplace, I found the perfect piece. It didn’t look anything like the desk I had in mind… yet. But I could see the potential—and that’s always the starting point.

So here is exactly how we completed our Marketplace desk upgrade and turned a second-hand find into a beautiful, functional workspace.

Pottery Barn Desk – My Inspiration

Why a Marketplace Desk Upgrade is Worth It

A Marketplace desk upgrade is one of the easiest ways to create a high-end look for less. With a little vision (and a bit of elbow grease), you can transform a dated piece into something that feels completely custom.

For us, it meant:

  • Saving a significant amount of money
  • Creating a desk that suited our exact space
  • Adding character to our home office

How We Transformed Our Marketplace Desk

Tony started by removing all of the handles and drawer runners so we could properly prepare the surface. Any holes and dents were filled, and the entire desk was given a thorough sand to create a smooth base.

From there, we made a series of simple but impactful upgrades:

  • Closed in the open side
We added plywood to enclose one end of the desk, which was originally open to house a computer tower. This instantly made the piece feel more substantial.
  • Added timber trim
Timber trim was applied to both ends and along the back of the desk to give it a more finished, custom look.
  • Installed a decorative backing panel
Between the two drawer units, we added a piece of timber to close the gap. It was actually a leftover piece of skirting we found in the garage—proof that you don’t always need to buy something new.
  • Updated the hardware
New handles were essential to elevate the overall look.

Finishing Touches for a Beautiful Desk Makeover

The biggest transformation came with paint.

We took the desk from orange-toned pine to a fresh, clean white. I started with a quality undercoat to prevent any bleed-through, which is especially important with timber pieces like this.

To finish it off, I chose marble and brass handles from Temple & Webster, which added just the right amount of elegance and tied in beautifully with the rest of the room.

Inside the pull-out keyboard drawer, we added acrylic and gold organisational pieces from Organised Style Living so we could make the most of every bit of storage.

The Final Result

The finished desk looks right at home in our newly renovated office. It’s practical, beautiful, and feels completely aligned with the space we’ve created.

This Marketplace desk upgrade is one of those projects that proves you don’t need to spend a fortune to achieve a high-end look—you just need a little creativity and a willingness to see what something could be.
