Woodland Baby Shower Ideas for a Large Backyard Celebration
There’s something incredibly special about celebrating a new baby surrounded by the people who already love them so much.
When it came time to plan Emily and Mitchell’s baby shower, we knew we wanted the day to feel relaxed, welcoming, and full of thoughtful details — a celebration that reflected both of them as they prepare to become parents.
While baby showers have traditionally been centred around the mum-to-be and her female friends, we absolutely love the growing trend of including the dad-to-be and his friends as well. It made the entire afternoon feel more relaxed, inclusive, and truly reflective of the next season of life they’re entering together.
So that’s exactly what we did.
And with almost 70 guests spread throughout our backyard, we also quickly realised we needed to create a celebration that felt cohesive and beautiful without becoming overly formal or impossible to manage.
Thankfully, the woodland theme tied everything together perfectly.
Creating a Woodland Storybook Baby Shower
This baby shower also became the very first real-life celebration for The Woodland Storybook Collection from The Joyful Celebration Studio — which made the day feel even more meaningful for Emily and me.
The collection was inspired by soft woodland tones, storybook animals, natural textures, gentle ginghams, timber details, and a calm neutral colour palette that felt warm and welcoming rather than overly themed.
You can explore more from The Joyful Celebration Studio and our celebration collections from the 1st of July 2026.
And if you’re planning your own woodland-themed celebration, you’ll also be able to shop the Woodland Storybook Collection styling pack through the studio on the 1st of July 2026.
Styling a Baby Shower for 70 Guests
One of the biggest challenges with hosting a larger baby shower is making the space still feel intimate and cohesive.
When decorations are spread across a large backyard, it can sometimes lose the “cute” factor that smaller baby showers naturally have. So instead of trying to decorate every single corner heavily, we focused on a few key impact areas:
- The food table
- Guest tables
- The photo wall
- The secret garden area
- The marquee seating area
By concentrating the styling in these key spaces, the celebration felt thoughtful, cohesive, and immersive without becoming overwhelming. We did have one final challenge to overcome—weeks of rain had left the ground incredibly wet—but thankfully it didn’t dampen the celebrations. Thanks to a few well-placed camping mats, no shoes were ruined on the day!
Relaxed Finger Food Instead of a Sit-Down Meal
With a guest list this size, we knew a formal sit-down meal would create far too much stress on the day.
Instead, we opted for a relaxed finger food menu that guests could enjoy throughout the afternoon while moving around the different spaces in the backyard.
We still made sure there was plenty of seating available, with tables scattered throughout the garden so guests always had somewhere to place drinks and food while chatting.
It created exactly the relaxed atmosphere we were hoping for.
The Woodland Baby Shower Food Table
The food table became one of the main focal points of the entire shower.
We layered timber risers, woodland creatures, greenery, and soft textures to create a relaxed woodland storybook feel, while allowing the food itself to become part of the styling.
The menu included:
Sweet Treats
- Mini Biscoff cheesecakes
- Raspberry jelly cheesecakes
- Mini Oreo mousse cups
- Hazelnut slice
- Brownies
- Mini carrot cakes
Savoury Food
- Individual pasta salad bowls
- Individual fruit salad bowls
- Individual Mexican dip cups with corn chips
- Mixed finger sandwiches
Throughout the afternoon, we also served hot food among the guests including:
- Mini meatball subs
- Ham and cheese sliders
- Homemade sausage rolls
- Quiche
And of course, the woodland-themed cake became the centrepiece of the table.
With its woodland animals, tiny mushrooms, chocolate bark detail, and little storybook-style house, it tied the entire theme together beautifully.
Simple Woodland Table Styling
For the guest tables, we kept things intentionally simple and cohesive.
Every table was covered with a white tablecloth, then layered with either a green or beige gingham runner to add softness and texture without overpowering the space.
Each table included one to three centrepieces depending on its size.
The centrepieces were created using:
- Timber rounds
- Mason jars filled with flowers
- Chocolate and white gingham ribbon
- Personalised stickers
- Small timber woodland figurines
The natural timber details paired beautifully with the soft gingham tones and helped create that calm woodland atmosphere we were hoping for.
Creating the Woodland Photo Wall
The photo wall became another major focal point of the shower.
We styled it against a white timber wall outdoors using:
- A balloon garland
- A personalised welcome sign
- Woodland creatures printed onto board
- Handmade woodland bunting
The neutral gingham backdrop and soft woodland illustrations helped the area feel playful while still remaining elegant and cohesive with the rest of the celebration.
A quick note if you’re considering balloon garlands outdoors in Australian heat — they can definitely test your patience! Beautiful? Yes. Relaxing to work with? Not so much.
The Secret Garden Mushroom Area
One of my favourite parts of the shower was our little woodland-inspired secret garden area.
Guests entered through the arborway where we hung oversized red and white paper mushrooms from the rafters to create a whimsical woodland feeling as people walked through.
Inside the garden area, the long table was styled with more mushrooms and paper woodland creatures suspended above the seating area.
I loved that this space added another playful layer to the celebration without becoming too themed or overly matchy.
It still felt soft, relaxed, and slightly whimsical — exactly the balance we were hoping for.
The Marquee Seating Area
Because we were hosting such a large group, we also erected a marquee in the backyard to provide additional shaded seating.
To soften the space, we hung:
- A woodland-themed backdrop
- Neutral paper lanterns
- Paper flowers
- Hanging woodland creatures
These small details helped the marquee feel connected to the rest of the styling rather than simply functioning as extra seating.
Easy Drinks Station Ideas for Large Gatherings
To keep things simple for guests — and for ourselves — we used a help-yourself drinks setup throughout the shower.
Buckets filled with ice and drinks were placed in multiple locations around the backyard, while our outdoor bar area remained open for guests to access throughout the afternoon.
For larger celebrations especially, this makes such a difference to the overall flow of the party and allows guests to relax without needing constant hosting attention.
A Celebration Full of Love
More than anything, this baby shower was about celebrating Emily and Mitchell as they prepare to welcome their little baby.
Yes, there were woodland details and mushroom decorations and far too many balloons.
But what made the day truly beautiful was simply having the people they love gathered together to celebrate this next chapter alongside them.
And honestly, that’s exactly what we hope The Joyful Celebration Studio will always be about.
Creating thoughtful celebrations that feel warm, welcoming, personal, and full of joy.
