How to Host a Murder Mystery Dinner Party

Hosting a murder mystery dinner party at home is one of the most fun and memorable ways to entertain.

It’s interactive, a little theatrical, and brings your guests together in a way that a traditional dinner party simply doesn’t. With a little organisation and a few thoughtful touches, you can create an evening filled with intrigue, laughter, and delicious food—without feeling overwhelmed.

If you love to entertain but still want to enjoy the evening with your guests, this is the perfect style of gathering.

Why a Murder Mystery Party Is the Perfect Entertaining Idea

A murder mystery party turns a simple dinner into an experience.
Your guests become part of the story—dressing in character, following clues, and working together to solve the mystery. It creates conversation naturally and removes that pressure of having to “host” every moment.
And the best part? With a little planning, it can be surprisingly stress-free.

Step 1: Choose Your Murder Mystery Game

To begin, you’ll need a murder mystery game pack.
These typically include:
Character descriptions
Scripts or prompts
Instructions for how the evening unfolds
Choose one that suits your group size (mine accommodated up to 13 guests, and I hosted 9).

Step 2: Plan Ahead for a Stress-Free Evening

If there’s one secret to hosting well, it’s this:
Organisation is everything.
When you plan ahead, you give yourself the freedom to relax and truly enjoy your guests.

Create Your Guest List and Assign Characters

Finalise your guest list early
Assign each guest a character (drawing names from a hat is an easy option)
Send invitations via email (Canva works beautifully for this)
Include each guest’s character card so they know:
Who they are playing
How to dress
Any props they may need
I kept things relaxed with a “movie premiere” dress code—dress up if you like, or simply come dressed for a special evening.

Set the Scene

Part of the fun is creating a little atmosphere.
For this game, I needed a “body” as part of the storyline. We used an old sheet, traced an outline, and added a simple painted detail—it was effective without being over the top.

Step 3: Plan a Make-Ahead Menu

The key to a stress-free dinner party is choosing food that can be prepared in advance.
You don’t want to be stuck in the kitchen while your guests are solving the mystery.

Simple Menu Structure

Your evening can follow a classic format:
Welcome drink
Starter
Main
Dessert
Coffee

Welcome Drink Idea

To start the evening, I created a simple salted caramel cocktail shot using:
Salted caramel liqueur
Cream and milk
A touch of butterscotch sauce
A pinch of salt
Shaken over ice and finished with fresh nutmeg—it was a lovely, indulgent way to begin the night.

Starter Ideas (Easy & Make-Ahead Friendly)

Because the game is played at the table, finger foods work beautifully:

Mini ham and cheese toasties

Mac and cheese (served in small glasses)

Pork and apple meatballs

All of these can be prepared ahead and reheated.

You can find my full recipes for these here:

Creamy Mac and Cheese

All of these can be prepared ahead and reheated.

Main Meal (Self-Serve for Ease)

To keep the table clear for the game, I opted for a self-serve dinner setup.
This worked perfectly and allowed everyone to help themselves between rounds.

Menu included:

  • Apricot chicken pie
  • Pork and fennel pie
  • Sweet Potato Mash
  • Steamed greens

Dessert (Simple but Impressive)

Dessert is where you can create a lovely finish without extra stress:
Mini Biscoff cheesecakes
Sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce
Both can be prepared ahead and reheated or assembled just before serving.

Coffee & Grazing Board

To finish the evening, I set up a simple coffee station and added a small chocolate and fruit board.
This allowed guests to continue playing, chatting, and enjoying the atmosphere without interruption.

Step 4: Stay Organised with Simple Lists

To keep everything running smoothly, prepare a few simple lists:
Menu plan
Shopping list (including a last-minute list)
Tasks to complete before the event
Timeline for preparation
💡 Setting your table a day or two in advance is a game changer—it gives you time to focus on the details without rushing.

Entertaining Made Easy

Hosting a murder mystery dinner party doesn’t need to feel complicated.
With a little planning, a thoughtful menu, and a willingness to keep things simple, you can create an evening that feels special, relaxed, and full of fun.
It’s the kind of gathering your guests will talk about long after the night is over.
