My favourite sweet potato mash

I entertain family and friends at home a lot. A roast meal is often my go to especially if I’m busy and don’t have a lot of time to prepare food. Finding accompaniments can be a task but my favourite sweet potato mash is always a winner.

In our family roast potatoes is a must and my favourite way to prepare them is duck roast potatoes. When I roast potatoes for a large family gathering it can be hard to roast other vegetables because of space in the oven. If thats the case then I will opt for a mash.

Mash is also a time saver as you can prepare ahead of time and reheat in the microwave which is a real win for me.

This recipe will serve a maximum of 8 people – in our family 6 😂 so if I have a large gathering I will double it.

How to make my favourite sweet potato mash

For this recipe you will need four medium sweet potatoes. There are several additions that add to the flavour of this dish. Butter is the usual suspect for mash but sour cream is also used in this recipe. You can use heavy cream but I find the sour cream gives a much better flavour. The other add ins are sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into relatively equal size pieces. Larger pieces will take longer to cook. Place in a saucepan and boil over high heat until the potato is tender. Drain all the water off.

I use a blender for this recipe because it gives a beautiful whipped texture to the potatoes but you can use a handheld or stand mixer or even a potato masher.

Place all ingredients into the blend and blend on high until well mixed and creamy in texture. Put into your serving bowl and top with some extra butter. If you are going to reheat leave the butter off until you have reheated and are ready to serve.

If you want to make this recipe ahead of time don’t add the serving butter until after you have reheated the mash.

    1. Thanks so much Missy. It is delicious. I also think it would be great with a pecan crumble on top as a Christmas side dish 😋
