Sweet Potato Mash

When you’re cooking for family and friends, it’s often the simple dishes that make the biggest impact. And for me, a good mash is always a winner.

This sweet potato mash is one of my go-to side dishes—creamy, lightly sweet, and full of flavour. It pairs perfectly with a roast and is especially helpful when oven space is limited (which always seems to happen when you’re entertaining!).

Why I Love This Recipe

When I’m hosting, I often turn to a roast meal—it’s comforting, easy to prepare, and feeds a crowd without too much fuss.
In our family, roast potatoes are non-negotiable (and I do love a good duck fat roast potato), which means oven space can get tight. That’s where this sweet potato mash comes in—it can be made ahead, reheated easily, and still tastes just as delicious.
It’s also one of those dishes that quietly steals the show.

Ingredients

For this recipe, you’ll need around four medium sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped.
To create that rich, creamy texture and flavour, I use butter and sour cream. While you could substitute cream, I find sour cream gives a slightly tangy depth that works beautifully with the natural sweetness of the potatoes.
A touch of sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg brings everything together and gives this mash its signature warm flavour.

Method

Begin by peeling and cutting your sweet potatoes into evenly sized pieces—this helps them cook at the same rate.
Place them into a saucepan of boiling water and cook over high heat until tender. Once cooked, drain thoroughly to remove any excess water.
For the smoothest, creamiest texture, I like to use a blender—but a hand mixer or even a traditional potato masher will work just as well.
Add the cooked sweet potatoes to your blender along with the butter, sour cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Blend until smooth, light, and creamy.
Transfer to a serving dish and top with a little extra butter just before serving.

Make Ahead Tips

This is such a helpful dish when entertaining.
You can prepare the mash ahead of time and store it in the fridge, then simply reheat in the microwave when needed. If you’re doing this, wait to add the extra butter on top until just before serving.
The recipe serves around 6–8 people, but it can easily be doubled for larger gatherings.

A Perfect Side for Entertaining

Equipment

  • Blender If you don't have a blender a food processor or handheld mixer will work

Ingredients

  • 4 medium sweet potatoes
  • 40 grams butter Approximately 3 tablespoons
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp Cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp fresh nutmeg grated I like fresh nutmeg it just has a better flavour but you can use dried if thats what you have on hand.
  • Extra butter for serving

Instructions

  • Peel and chopped sweet potatoes into equal pieces. Smaller pieces will cook quicker. Boil over high head for approximately 15-20 mins. Drain the potatoes.
  • Place potatoes into the blender and then add all over ingredients with the exception of the butter for serving.
  • Blend on high until all ingredients are mixed and the mixture is really creamy.
  • Serve in a beautiful bowl topped with some extra butter.

Notes

If you want to make this recipe ahead of time don’t add the serving butter until after you have reheated the mash.

    1. Thanks so much Missy. It is delicious. I also think it would be great with a pecan crumble on top as a Christmas side dish 😋
