Mini Mac and Cheese Cups

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about mac and cheese—it’s comforting, familiar, and always a crowd favourite. But when you’re entertaining, it’s lovely to take those classic dishes and give them a little twist.

These mini mac and cheese cups are the perfect example. Creamy, cheesy, and full of flavour, they’re served in individual portions, making them ideal for parties, grazing tables, or as an easy side dish when you’re hosting.

They’re simple to make, easy to customise, and guaranteed to disappear quickly.

Ingredients

For this recipe, you’ll need macaroni, milk, butter, plain flour, and a good melting cheese such as cheddar (or a blend if you prefer a deeper flavour). To finish, you’ll also need breadcrumbs for that lovely golden topping, along with a little salt and pepper to season.

Method

Start by cooking your macaroni according to the packet instructions, then drain and set aside.
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over a gentle heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and allow it to cook for a minute or so—this step helps remove that floury taste and creates the base for your sauce. Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously as you go to keep everything smooth. Continue stirring until the sauce thickens into a creamy consistency.
Reduce the heat to low, then stir through your grated cheese until melted and silky. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then remove from the heat. Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and gently mix until everything is well coated.
At this point, you can transfer the mixture into ramekins or a baking dish, sprinkle over the breadcrumbs, and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) until golden and bubbling.

To Serve as Mini Party Cups

For entertaining, you can take this one step further.
Once baked, allow the mac and cheese to cool slightly, then spoon into small glasses or mini serving cups. This creates the perfect bite-sized party appetiser—easy for guests to enjoy while mingling.

Easy Add-Ins to Elevate the Flavour

One of the best things about mac and cheese is how adaptable it is. You can easily tailor it to suit your menu or what you have on hand.
Some simple favourites:
Bacon & onion – fry until golden, then stir through before baking
Broccoli or corn – adds colour and freshness
Cooked chicken – makes it more substantial

A Simple Entertaining Favourite

This is the kind of dish I love to serve when entertaining—it’s comforting, easy to prepare ahead, and always well received.
Served in little cups, it feels just that bit more special… without creating any extra work for you.

I first served these at our murder mystery party, and they were perfect—warm, comforting, and easy for guests to enjoy as they moved between clues and conversation.

Ingredients

  • 250 gram macaroni pasta
  • 500 ml milk (17 ounces)
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 180 grams cheddar cheese (grated) (6.3 ounces)
  • 120 grams breadcrumbs (4.2 ounces)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F).
  • Cook the pasta as per the instructions on the packet.
  • Melt butter in a good sized saucepan over medium heat, add flour and whisk until you have a smooth paste.
  • Add milk a little at a time whisking well after each addition. Keep whisking until sauce thickens slightly.
  • Reduce heat to low and add 150 grams of the cheese and a little salt and pepper. Stir well until the cheese has melted.
  • Add the cooked pasta to the cheese sauce. Depending on how you will be serving the mac and cheese you will either fill small ramekins with the mix or in my case I filled a casserole dish with all the mac and cheese. For serving I will spoon in to shot glasses.
  • Sprinkle breadcrumbs and remaining cheese on top. Bake for 20 minutes until lightly browned on top.
